Remember: The SAVE Act is NOT about voter ID laws.
The SAVE Act is about showing very specific kinds of ID to register to vote which disenfranchises millions of Americans. This legislation does not secure the election but instead prevents Americans from accessing the ballot box.
Two important things YOU must know:
The types of ID allowed is extremely limited- and in most states, including Pennsylvania, does NOT include the Real ID
Voter registration could only happen in person and at a government agency like the SMV or Board of Elections—no more online registration for voter registration drives.
The SAVE ACT is also a de facto poll tax: Compared to white US citizens, citizens of color are three times more likely to lack documents such as birth certificates, passports, naturalization certificates, or certificates of citizenship or face difficulties accessing them.
- 9% of all eligible voters do not have, or do not have easy access to, documentary proof of citizenship.
- 52% of registered voters do not have an unexpired passport with their current legal name.
- 11% of registered voters do not have access to their birth certificate.
THIS ACT WOULD ALSO DISENFRANCHISE MILLIONS OF WOMEN AND TRANSGENDER INDIVIDUALS WHOSE CURRENT NAMES DO NOT MATCH THE NAMES ON THEIR BIRTH CERTIFICATES.
If Congress was serious about securing elections they would pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to ensure the elections were accessible and reflective of our communities. Instead, they are trying to impede on our rights and take away the right to vote.
